What passenger seat zero-point calibration is

The passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) tells the vehicle whether the front passenger seat is occupied, and by whom. A child. A small adult. A full-sized adult. An empty seat with a bag on it. The OCS reading drives the passenger airbag’s deployment decision in a collision.

After certain repairs, the OCS stops trusting its own readings. The seat has to be re-zeroed against the OEM position statement before the airbag system will operate the way the manufacturer designed it. That is the procedure technicians refer to as a “zero-point” or “neutral” calibration.
